Using article writing on the internet to promote internet website and business became fashionable because of the demand by the major search engines, (especially Google.com) that a website must have one-way links in order to have link popularity and have the chance of getting a high page rank and top 10 ranking.

Many webmasters and online business owners began writing and posting articles at thousands of article directories and websites.

After a couple of years of this article writing mania, many internet marketers discovered a bitter truth: even though they have written and posted many articles on topics relevant to their online businesses and have obtained hundreds of one way links, they were still not getting high page ranks and top 10 rankings (as promised by the Search engines.)

Even in some cases where a few internet marketers noticed a slight increase in page rank and top 10 ranking, they disappeared after a few months when the search engines updated their databases.

Many internet marketers and website owners began to wonder what might be wrong with article writing promotion and why it was not generating floods of website traffics like it was supposed to.

The reasons are:

Many of the article directories where they post their articles hardly promote their directories.

If they do not, then the articles are not exposed to the search engines in order to be found when prospects search for information on the products and services using the search engines.

When people desire to shop online, most do not go to article directories.

Instead, they use the search engines to search for what they desire.

If your article about a product or service, which you are promoting, does not appear among the top 20 search engine results, you may not get any traffics at all.

It is possible that virtually nobody is reading your articles.

If that is so, how can you get any website traffics from them?

Most likely, the only people who go to article directories are other internet marketers who go there to post their own articles.

And they must be newbies.

The old timers use article poster softwares to post their articles automatically.

And even if both the newbies and old timers have time to read your articles, unless your articles are on the homepage, in the front page or on top of the other articles, they will not see or read them.

Most article directories have hundreds of thousands of articles in hundreds of different topics.

Nobody will have the time to read these hundreds of thousands of articles and have the sufficient interest to go to your website, not to mention placing an order for your products or services.

Most of these people are webmasters and internet marketers trying to post articles to generate one-way links to get high page ranks.

They are not targeted prospects or buyers for your products/services because they are sellers!

So even if out of curiosity they see your website on the front page (homepage) and click and go there, it is unlikely they will buy from you.

The reason is that even if you have what they may need such as a website promotion software, they will most likely prefer to clone your software and create their own and market it and get rich than to buy it from you.

Moreover, most webmasters and internet marketers have hundreds of websites and do not have any time to waste reading other peoples’ articles.

And chances are that they may already know the topic you are writing about.

By the way, just because your article is on top or in the front page of the website does not mean that it will automatically be read and the readers will flock to your website.

Your article have to be informative, interesting and relevant to what the reader is looking for in order to generate enough interest in him/her to click and go to your website.

Besides, at your website, you must have exactly what he/she desires and it must be priced rightly for him/her to place an order.

As if these are not enough problems, the search engines are very tricky.

They demand that you get one-way links in order for them to consider you an authority website so that they can give you a high page rank and include you in the top 10 rankings so that you may begin getting website traffics from them.

So, you wrote many articles and posted at the article directories.

In about a week, they published them and you will automatically got one-way links from hundreds of websites.

But instead of the search engines honoring their promise, they would declare that your hundreds of articles and one-way links are duplicate articles and links and therefore invalid and so they would NOT give you the high page ranks and top 10 ranking which they promised you.

So, assuming you have been writing and posting articles daily for about 1 yr, by then you might likely have at least 20,000 websites with your articles published there and thousands of one way links.

But to your horror, you would discover that the search engines did not recognize these thousands of links and if you checked your links with them, you would be horrified to notice that out of about 1000 links, they might have recognized may be 10 links, while the rest were considered duplicate and invalid.

Therefore, because of all these problems, would it be safe to conclude that using article writing to promote your website and online business is dead and do not work anymore?

No.

It still works.

But you need to know and apply a few creative twists to doing it.

Here are some of them:

(1) When writing an article, choose a topic, which has a mass appeal so that hundreds of thousands of people will be searching for the information, which would lead them to find your article in the search engines.

(2) The articles, which most people write, are terrible.

The reason is that many people are not natural writers.

They have been forced to write articles so they may use them to promote their websites and online businesses.

Therefore, if you are not a natural creative and interesting writer, hire one and give him/her the topics and keywords relevant to your websites to write short, informative and interesting articles for you.

Competition forces people to bring out the best in themselves because they always have to come up with something better. We probably would not have the internet now, we probably would not have the advances that we have, probably would not have audio online. So competition does bring out the best in people. We use to use another audio company online, that was the first audio company that we used to put audio on a website.

And back then we thought that they were the only ones and they charged us about thirty dollars a month. There were quite a few things that we wanted that they did not offer and one was to record conference calls. Well, one day we just got tired of not being able to do that because we would want to go on and listen to the conference calls of other people and we would want to record it so that we could listen to it over and over again, so we could listen to everything and memorize the information. We do listen to the information over and over again and also read information over and over again, usually two, three or four times. Every time you go over information you will pick up something new that you did not pick up the first time around when you listened to the information or read it.

The thing is we found a better company by doing a search on Google, and guess what, they had not only the features that we wanted but they had more. We were impressed with them, not only that, but they were ten dollars less. So we got our membership with that audio site and cancelled the other one and never looked back. That is competition. They made a better product, we chose to use it. They distinguished themselves in that market place, in that niche. Same thing when you are in a program opportunity, a product that you are selling and you are in competition with other people selling the same product, whether it is pay per click, or you are sending out to another person’s list, or press releases, articles or any other marketing method that you are using.

Going back to pay per click, all you have to do is set yourself apart, make yours a better ad, change your ad periodically. Change your lead capture page and landing page that your ad goes to. When you are doing pay per click, and you pay for each click, it is not like a classified ad in a magazine or an article in a newspaper where it is just there and you only pay a one time fee, you pay per click. Your competition, other people’s ads in the same keywords that you are marketing under, will click on your ad just to see what you are doing. A lot of times you will actually end up signing up your competition, they look and they like your information, they end up signing up with you. These are people that you are competing with under the keywords of other opportunity programs that you are in. But a lot of times you will sign them up.

You have to make yourself different, it is like in the coffee business, each one is different. Computers, cars, they are all different, they are all in the same market place and yet it does not mean that the car market is saturated, it just means that you have to make a different product. Why is yours better, why should I go with you, why should I use your product. If you are among other competition, it is just a myth that there is saturation, if you are among other competition you have to make yourself better, have a better ad, make a better landing page or sales page, something different. Get some new graphics, I am sure you have some graphics and it is not pulling as good a couple of months later, get some new graphics, change your headline, change your landing page around, get some new news.

The internet is made up to give people news or information, the latest information. That is why Google, for instance, or search engines love sites and rank them higher for the frequency of content that is added to the site. The spiders come back to crawl the site more often and you get better ranking to the frequency of the content added to the site. It also gives value to the sites that have other sites linking to them, because it thinks that they are important because a lot of other people are looking at them. This is how the internet works, and that is the reason for updating your site. We are always updating different things that we do with our company, things are always changing. If you were with us from the beginning you would notice that things were changing every couple of weeks or every week depending on the time frame.

There was a time when the search engines were okay with this but as is usually the case, people went overboard with it.

Make sure the links on your directory page relate directly or indirectly to the content on your website. In fact save yourself the time and effort by focusing on getting one way links to your site. A couple of quality one way links are worth way more than thousands of links unrelated to your niche.

2. The Sybil Attack

One of the most famous TV movies of all time is Sybil: The Girl with 16 Different Personalities starring Sally Field. This is the blackhat foundation for setting up mirror sites.

By creating multiple web sites with the exact same content but different domain addresses, blackhatters are able to trick the search engines into ranking their main website higher. Sybil attacks can also turn quite nasty and take control of large scale computer networks including peer to peer systems which are quite vulnerable.

3. Cloaking

Cloaking software was an underground rage a few years back. The concept is to present two types of content: One for the actual visitors to your website, the other was for the search engine spiders that crawl your web pages looking for updating content that has been keyword optimized. This was an elaborate way of getting the search engines to show a page they normally would not.

All of this may sound ridiculous and totally unnecessary. Yes on both counts. The easiest way to stay on the good side of the search engines is to give them exactly what they want; namely a website with good content (preferably unique) that grows at a more natural pace.

This maybe a slow way to success for some people but it’s safe and it works. You are growing a business which you hope will be prosperous for years to come. Do not let anyone talk you into putting it at risk by using blackhat techniques.
